You’ve done it. Your hair finally grew out after taking the time to do so. What should you do with your luscious mane now that it’s full?

What about Long Hairstyles For Men? Growing it out was easy, but what about styling long hair for men? Is it just left to grow on its own? Do you use any products in it?

Don’t worry, gentlemen; I’ve got you covered. Let me show you how to style men’s long hair correctly so you can keep rocking that head of hair worry-free.

What Does Men’s Long Hairstyle Mean?

Long Hairstyles For Men

The term “long hair” usually conjures images of shoulder-length hair for most guys.

There are, however, different categories of hair length and what is considered long hair.

It is more than just a trend; long hairstyles for men are a way to celebrate individuality and depart from traditional norms. Long hair communicates a sense of freedom and a sense of style, regardless of whether the locks are flowing or tousled.

Make a bold choice to redefine masculinity on your own terms by embracing the versatility of longer strands, going beyond grooming.

It is easy to visualize the two extremes of hair length. Men generally agree that buzz cuts belong to the short hair category and shoulder-length hair belongs to the long hair category.

Long hair, however, is considered pretty darn long when it measures more than 6 inches.

Men’s Long Hairstyles 1: Men’s Medium-Length Hair

Men's Medium-Length Hair

Hair that is between two and four inches long is considered medium-length.

The length of this hairstyle can be maintained with just monthly hair appointments. Most guys stick with this length of hair because it looks classically masculine and is relatively easy to maintain.

In addition, it’s very popular due to the variety of ways you can style it and the variety of products you can use to style it.

Short and medium-length hair can be styled in many of the same ways.

Men’s Long Hairstyles 2: Men’s Medium-Long Hair

Men's Medium-Long Hair

Hair between four and six inches long is considered medium-length.

Because of their middle-of-the-road length, medium-long trees can be harder to care for as they need to be trimmed frequently, along with more general maintenance.

However, it remains popular among guys who want longer hair, but want more styling options.

Since long hair offers more flexibility in its appearance, it does not require much trimming, maybe every few months.

Men’s Long Hairstyles 3: Men’s Shoulder Length Hair

Men's Shoulder Length Hair

Hair that is between 6 & 8 inches long is considered shoulder-length for men (or, you guessed it, long enough to reach your shoulders!) Some men find this length a bit too long or too short, but for most men, it offers a number of benefits if you want to stand out.

Shoulder-length hair is ideal for buns and ponytails because it is long enough. If you don’t have time to style your hair in the morning or like to keep your hair out of your face, this can be a great option for you. Sun and wind protection can also be provided by it.

Hair that is shoulder-length can also be styled in a variety of ways due to its length. Hair can be slicked back, put in a man bun, or worn messy. Changing your hairstyle without cutting it short or going to the barber can completely change your look.

The main disadvantage of shoulder-length hair is that it can be hard to manage if you don’t have the time to style it every day. It can start to look messy and unkempt if you let it go too long without cutting it.

What’s the best men’s long hairstyle for you?

Your hairstyle might not be the best for you just because you’ve been doing it for years. Your hair changes as you age – it thins, dries, and becomes less manageable.

It is important to consider your personal taste, lifestyle, and maintenance preferences when choosing a long hairstyle. With shoulder-length waves and layered cuts, the classic appeal of shoulder-length waves is effortlessly charming.

Choose between a man bun and a messy flow to suit your mood. Your choice should be tailored to your face shape and hair type. The long hairstyle you choose should complement your overall aesthetic and reflect your personality.

No matter what long hairstyle you choose, you’ll make a confident statement that aligns seamlessly with your unique identity, whether you prefer a carefree surfer vibe or a polished, modern look. Find the long hairstyle that compliments your style journey by experimenting, exploring, and discovering.

Wouldn’t it be great if you changed up your look to match? If you want to change things up a bit and sport a longer hairstyle, knowing how to grow your hair out to suit your style and face structure is essential.

How To Find The Right Length Hair For Your Face Shape

Long Hairstyles For Men

The shape of your face is one of the most important factors to consider when choosing a new hairstyle. Choosing the wrong style can highlight the wrong features, making you look unbalanced.

What are the styles that will work best for you? The breakdown is as follows:

Round Faces

Make sure you avoid styling your hair in a way that adds volume to the sides of your head. Consider styles that are shorter on the sides and longer on top to lengthen your face.

Square Faces

Styles that are shorter on the sides and longer on top will soften the angles of your face. By doing so, you will be able to create the illusion that your face is oval-shaped.

Oval Faces

There is almost no style you can’t wear – you’re lucky! You should avoid styles that are too short or too long, as these will affect your facial proportions.

Oblong Faces

By adding volume around the sides, you can create the illusion that the face is shorter. A long face can also be balanced out with short side styles and longer top styles.

Diamond Faces

Create the illusion of wider cheekbones by adding volume to your temples and top of your head. It is best to avoid styles that are too short or too tight, as they will only highlight your already sharp features.

Triangle Faces

By keeping the sides of your hair short and adding volume at the crown, you can balance out a wide jawline. Your face will look wider if you choose styles like crew cuts or bowl cuts.

How to Grow Out Your Long Hair

How to Grow Out Your Long Hair

We have some tips for growing your hair out without looking like a mess, if you’re ready for a change but don’t know how. These tips will help you get past those awkward stages and into luscious hair:

Start with a trim

Even though it might seem counterintuitive, getting rid of damaged ends can actually help your hair grow faster. You’ll be glad you did!

Get regular trims

Keep your hair trimmed every 6-8 weeks after you’ve grown it out to prevent split ends from causing further damage.

Be patient

Hair growth takes time – just like everything else in life! You’ll soon have luscious locks that reach your shoulders (or even farther) if you don’t get impatient during this awkward phase.

What Are The Best Ways To Style Shoulder-Length Hair?

Long Hairstyles For Men

Your styling options begin to diminish when you have shoulder-length hair.

It is impossible to wear your hair up or down naturally at this point because the hair is so long. You’ve worked hard to grow out your hair, now it’s time to take it to the next level.

As with medium-length hair, this length can only be styled in a few different ways.

Let Down With A Front Part

Hair that is shoulder-length can be parted to one side or pulled back with a product when worn down.

In either case, your long hair will be flowing naturally.

Even with shoulder-length hair, you can make it look even better with a few added steps.

This should be styled as follows:

  • The natural texture of your hair can be achieved by brushing it out.
  • The hair should be parted in the middle and let either side flow naturally.
  • Then use hairspray to give it more hold and polish it off with clay.

Tied Back

When worn back casually or slicked back for a more polished look, shoulder-length hair can look great.

In terms of quick and easy styling, this is the best method for long hair.

In this case, you should tie your hair in a way that doesn’t resemble a traditional feminine ponytail, because it doesn’t always look good on a man.

This should be styled as follows:

  • The hair should be pulled back to the lower back of the head
  • Tie a hair tie around your head
  • To achieve a polished look, use a pomade to slick your hair back

How To Use A Blow Dryer To Style Men’s Long Hair

Long Hairstyles For Men

There’s nothing easier (pun intended) than using a hair dryer!

Take a step back before you start blowing hot air at yourself: ‘Do I really know what I’m doing?’

If you want your hair to look well styled instead of frizzy, you need to know the correct way to blow dry it.

The first thing you need to do is get the heat right! When your hair is too hot, it will be damaged, and when it is too cold, it will not function properly.

It’s best to keep your locks between 80 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit; any higher and you risk scorching them.

The second thing you need to pay attention to is the direction you point the nozzle in. The airflow should always be directed downwards, starting at the root and ending at the tip.

A big head of frizz is all you’ll get if you point it upwards. If you’re going for an 80s look, this isn’t the best look.

Last but not least, if your diffuser has an attachment, use it. You prevent your hair from drying out too much in one area by evenly distributing the heat.

It shouldn’t be too difficult to achieve barbershop style at home if you follow these tips.

Pro Tip: When blow drying your hair, be sure to blow it in the direction you want it to go. The brush can help you guide your hair into the right direction while you blow dry it.

Should Men With Long Hair Use A Comb Or Hairbrush?

A brush is better than a comb for guys who have longer hair.

Knotting is very likely to occur when your hair grows longer than a few inches. Hair knots occur for the same reason as knots in other strands – they wrap around one another and cause tangles.

If you’ve ever had to untangle headphone wires, you know how annoying this is!

When it comes to hair, a hair brush is an excellent tool for detangling your strands and achieving that Jason Mamoa long hairstyle. To determine which hair brush is right for you, you just need to know what type of hair you have:

There is a difference between straight hair and curly hair when it comes to wavy hair. Thus, it does not curl as easily as other types of hair – but knotting can still be an issue first thing in the morning.

No need to use a super wide brush for knots that aren’t that tough. Make sure your hair isn’t pulled out by something too heavy and thin!

Knotting should not be a problem for men with thin long hair that falls straight. It is possible to experience problems if you leave your hair unbrushed for a long period of time. Keeping your hair brushed regularly will help it look thicker by maintaining an even drop.

You can accomplish this by using a thin or wide brush and ensuring that your hair falls into place as you brush. In order to hide any imperfections in your hairstyle, look for gaps where your scalp can be seen and brush over them.

Hair that is straight and thick can be challenging. If you don’t brush your hair regularly, it can get pretty knotted!

Gents with long hair and thick manes should use a wider brush, but with gentle strokes. You might lose a big chunk of hair if you pull too hard on thick knots.

There is no doubt that kinky hair (or ‘Afro-textured’ hair) is the most difficult to manage. In order to maintain your hairdo, you’ll need a more specialized tool than a traditional brush.

Hair picks (commonly referred to as combs with very long, thin teeth) or hair brush sponges work best. You can manage tight curls with these, and they will look neat and uniform.

The term coily hair refers to hair that is broken up into large coils and curls.

In terms of hairbrushes, long-haired men have three options – oval brushes, round brushes, and hair picks. With these three brush styles, you can get deep into your curly hair coils and remove knots and tangles.

Best Hair Care Tips For Men With Longer Hair

Long Hairstyles For Men

Men’s long hair doesn’t require much maintenance or product once you know how to style it.

You may also experience some pretty nasty side effects if you don’t take care of it properly! Whether it’s grease, psoriasis of the scalp, or hair loss, I’m talking about it.

It is important to remember that the longer your hair, the more regimental your hair care routine needs to be.

This is where things get complicated – not everyone’s hair is the same! What works for one type of hair might not work for another. Different hair types need different care routines.

You’re in good hands with me as always. I will break down the types and how a man should take care of them as simply as possible.

You need to understand the porosity, texture, and moisture of your hair at a basic level.

Men’s Long Hair & Porosity

Moisture can be absorbed and retained by the hair shaft based on its porosity. The tightness or looseness of your cuticle scales determines your skin’s elasticity. A basic understanding of hair shaft anatomy is necessary to understand porosity.

There are three layers in the hair shaft: the medulla, the cortex, and the cuticle. For this discussion, it is most important to examine the cuticle layer.

Keeping your hair moisturized and conditioned requires a healthy cuticle. We use the term “hair porosity” to describe how tightly or loosely your cuticles lie: low, medium, and high porosity.

  • A person’s cuticles are tightly bound to the cortex when they have low porosity hair. The thickening of the strands prevents moisture from penetrating deeply. Due to this, low porosity hair is prone to dryness and damage.
  • It is less common to find hair with medium porosity. Hair with partially lifted scales is more prone to frizzing and tangling than hair with unlifted scales.
  • It is very rare to find hair with high porosity. As a result of its raised scales, this type of hair allows moisture to penetrate easily, but is also more prone to being weighed down by products.

The porosity of your hair varies from day to day, so determining it can be difficult. To test your own porosity, here’s a quick method you can do at home. Before you wet your hair next time, ask yourself these questions:

  • What’s the most common look? 90% of the time does it look dry and frizzy?( Having a high porosity)
  • Most of the time, does it look flat and shiny? (Porosity low)
  • Where does it fall? Porosity medium

Low porosity hair

Shampoos and conditioners without protein should be used. It is important to keep in mind that low-porosity hair tends to be protein-sensitive, which could result in damage if the wrong product is used.

Oil buildup can be prevented by using water-based conditioners and leave-ins.

Medium porosity hair

There is less to worry about. Most high-quality store-brand products should work fine on medium porosity hair because it is neither too dry nor too wet.

Make sure you wash your hair regularly and maintain your regular haircare routine.

High porosity hair

Proteins, oils, and shea butter should be used in shampoos and conditioners. You can slow the rate at which your hair dries out by using leave-in conditioners often and applying coconut oil daily.

Use a heat protectant if you’re blow-drying your hair, and wash it with cold water.

Men’s Long Hair & Texture

The texture of hair can be explained and identified more easily than porosity – it’s essentially the thickness of one individual strand.

When you roll one strand of dry hair between your fingers, you will be able to determine your hair’s texture:

  • It is likely that you have fine hair if you cannot follow a strand of hair with your fingers.
  • You have medium hair if you can feel something, but it’s hard to track perfectly.
  • Hair that is coarse can be easily tracked, almost like a thin wire.

Fine hair

Keeping in mind that your hair is prone to breaking is the most important thing you can do. Hair that is brushed too hard, heated too much, or towel dried too roughly will be damaged.

When shampooing, be gentle and apply product lightly. Shampoo and conditioner that describe themselves as ‘volumizing’ are the best for fine hair. They are lightweight formulations that won’t weigh your hair down.

To avoid further damage to your hair, use a low-heat setting on your blow dryer if necessary.

Medium-textured hair

You’re lucky – your hair is pretty resilient and can stand up to most products. The majority of shampoos and conditioners will be suitable for your hair type, and you can towel-dry your hair without too much worry.

It’s easy for you! Be careful not to overheat your hairdryer and use natural products. You may think your hair is invincible, but it’s not!

Hair that is coarse

There is a vast improvement in the strength, protein content, and chemical resistance of your hair.

It can, however, be stiff (especially when dry), and it can frizz very easily. The resulting difficulty in managing coarse hair is due to this reason.

It is best to avoid products that are high in protein when buying products for coarse hair. It can be even harder to manage coarse hair with shampoos, conditioners, and styling products that contain higher protein counts.

Men’s Long Hair & Scalp Moisture

There are a lot of guys who forget that their scalps are part of their skin! You can have oily, dry, or a combination of oily and dry scalp skin – which has a huge impact on the haircare products you use.

Ask yourself these questions if you’re not sure how oily your scalp is:

  • What is the condition of my face? Is it dry, oily, or balanced? Sebum production in the scalp can also be determined by this indicator.
  • If I shampoo and condition my scalp, how soon does it get oily?
  • Do my ends stay dry even though my scalp gets oily?

Choose the description that best describes your scalp characteristics:

  • Dry Scalp: After washing, your scalp dries quickly, usually within 24 hours, and/or itchy, flaky, or irritated.
  • Oily Scalp: Your scalp gets oily after washing, and it’s flat and hard to manage. There is a possibility that you have dandruff or not.
  • Combination: scalp gets oily quick, but ends remain dry even without washing for days at a time.

Dry scalp

Consider using a deep conditioning mask or protein treatment twice a week instead of washing your hair daily. The best product for this is coconut oil masks.

Additionally, I recommend using a gentler shampoo and moisturizing conditioner. Avoid shampoos that list the following ingredients on the first line when shopping for shampoo:

  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
  • Sodium Laureth Sulfate
  • Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate
  • Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate

We call these detergents – sure, they can work wonders for greasy scalps, but for guys with dry scalps, they might do more harm than good.

Oily scalp

It is likely that your scalp and hair will become greasy within 24 to 48 hours of shampooing. It is possible that your oily build-up is caused by one of the following problems:

  1. It may be necessary to use a stronger shampoo
  2. It may be necessary for you to shampoo more frequently

Using a sulfate shampoo or clarifying shampoo is recommended for gentlemen with greasy hair. In other words, it helps reduce oil in your hair and gives your locks a cleaner appearance.

Due to the build-up of sebum on your scalp, you need the extra chemistry that people with dry scalp avoid.

Combination scalps

Your hair will likely be oily and dry at the same time.

It is common for guys with long hair to have dry ends, while their hair base and scalp are oily. There is some confusion about treatment due to this.

Use the same shampoo as you would for someone with just an oily scalp, but long, thick hair. This is because the roots are the problem, and once you treat these, the rest of your hair issues should be resolved.

Make sure your hair is properly shampooed and conditioned. You should only scrub your scalp when you shampoo combination hair. On the way down, the shampoo will pick up any remaining dirt.

It is also important to apply conditioner only from midpoint to ends – let the conditioner sit for 3-5 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

How To Style Long Hair For Men

How To Style Long Hair For Men

Long hair needs to be styled correctly so that men don’t look scruffy, unkempt, and unstylish. Men with long hair can look unique and attractive, but it must be styled in an intentional and polished manner.

Long hair can be styled in many different ways, and experimenting with different looks is the best way to find out what works for you. Finding the right look might take you a while, but it’s worth taking the time to try a few.

Check out these top tips on how to style different lengths of men’s hair for a well-styled man with long hair.

How Do You Style Medium-Long Hair?

There is a challenge to styling medium-length hair because it cannot be tied or tucked like long hair, but it cannot be styled like a shorter hairstyle either.

If you want your hair to flow naturally and look great, you should choose hairstyles that allow it to do so.

Once you have the knowledge, styling medium-length hair is pretty simple, as there are only a few ways to do it well.

Side And Front Part

With medium-long hair, the side and front parts give you a styled look while remaining easy to manipulate. They work well with the hair’s natural flow.

Whether you’re wearing a suit or casual clothes, this is a great option for guys with this hair length.

Minimal styling makes it look great. For the front of the hair to flow backward, you will need to use pomade/hair clay.

This should be styled as follows:

  • Restore your hair’s texture with texture clay.
  • To hold a side part in place, sweep one side back with clay.
  • Slick your hair backwards in the middle of your head using the clay.
  • Use hair spray for extra hold if you want a more polished look.

The Bun

Medium-length hair is easily styled with the bun because it couldn’t be easier.

It is best to place the bun near the crest of the back of the head, though low on the back of the head is also acceptable.

This should be styled as follows:

  • Make sure the hair is pulled back to the head’s crest.
  • Tie it in place with a hair tie.
  • Tucking the hair back and tying it up will give it a casual look.
  • Put a pomade or clay on the hair and tie it neatly for a polished look.

What Styling Products Work Best On Men’s Long Hair?

What Styling Products Work Best On Men's Long Hair

It’s essential you not only know what products to use, but also HOW to use them before I break out the different hairstyles guys with longer hair can achieve!

Therefore, I thought it’d be helpful to explain how each product can help you achieve your desired style.

How To Use Pomade When Styling Men’s Long Hair

For many years, men have worn slicked-back hair. There is a neatness, a tidyness, and a stylishness to it. With pomade, it is possible to achieve this style despite it appearing difficult. This hair product gives your hair a shiny finish and keeps it in place. You can choose from matte or shiny finishes, so you’re sure to find one that suits you.

Slick-back hairstyles can be created by applying pomade to dry hair. From root to tip, distribute it evenly throughout your hair. Slick your hair back using a comb or brush until it is smooth and sleek. You can tame flyaways or loose strands with pomade if you have any.

How To Use Hair Clay When Styling Men’s Long Hair

It is important to find a clay brand that suits your needs out of the many available on the market. Hair with thick, coarse texture may benefit from some clays, whereas fine or thin hair may benefit from others. Furthermore, you should choose a clay that won’t leave your hair stiff or greasy – trust me, that won’t look good!

Make sure to read the instructions before purchasing any hair product worth its salt, as it should state which hair type it is suitable for.

Long hair can be styled in a variety of ways once you have found the right clay. Work a small amount through damp or dry hair until the desired effect is achieved.

Use only a small amount of clay at the roots of your hair to avoid your hair becoming clogged up and sticky. To work it through the rest of your hair, you can use your hands or a comb.

How To Use Hair Spray When Styling Men’s Long Hair

The styling of long hair presents a lot of challenges for men.

The good news is that there is one product that can help you achieve a long-lasting hairstyle without causing your hair to look greasy. Your hair looks good all day long when you use hair spray to create a barrier between it and the environment.

You won’t feel heavy or greasy after applying hair spray, unlike some other products. As a result of the light composition of this product, it won’t weigh down your hair or make your head look flat.

Spray the hair spray evenly over your hair by holding the can about six inches away from your head.

More hair spray can be applied to problem areas for a stronger hold. Make sure not to spray it directly on your scalp, as this can cause irritation.

How To Use Sea Salt Spray When Styling Men’s Long Hair

In sea salt spray, salt water and other natural ingredients are combined to create a hair product. You can achieve the perfect, loose style without applying too much product with this product if you have long hair.

Flyaways can also be tamed with sea salt spray, which adds volume and texture to hair. Hair feels quite natural after applying sea salt spray instead of hairspray, which makes hair stiff and sticky.

Can a 10-inch mohawk be held up with sea salt spray?

It’s not. While it won’t weigh down your hair or make it feel like sandpaper, it will give you that ‘just been swimming at the beach’ look that many long-haired guys aspire to.

After spraying your hair with sea salt spray, scrunch your strands with your hands as it absorbs into your hair. If you want to achieve maximum volume, you can use a diffuser. If you have long hair, make sure you spray the roots with the spray. Apply the product to your hair and let it air-dry. You can also style your hair with the product once it has dried.
